Key Takeaways

  • One address, https://orangechat.ai/mcp, connects OrangeChat to Claude, Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT, Muse or any assistant that supports MCP connectors
  • Once connected, you can ask about calls and transcripts, update hours and greetings, or set up a brand-new receptionist by chat
  • Setup takes about 2 minutes: add the connector, sign in on orangechat.ai, pick your business, approve
  • Your assistant cannot pay, buy phone numbers or see your API keys, and every change it makes is logged
  • Going live still happens in the dashboard: you choose a plan from $49/month and a phone number yourself

If you already ask Claude or ChatGPT to draft your emails and quotes, you can now ask it about your phones too. OrangeChat connects to the AI assistant you already use, so "who called today and what did they want?" gets a real answer from your real call log, and "we're closed Monday" updates your receptionist without you opening a dashboard.

It works through MCP, the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI assistants plug into outside tools. You don't need to know anything about it. You paste one address into your assistant, sign in, and approve. The 90-second video above shows the whole thing.

What you can do once it's connected

The most useful part is that you can manage your receptionist from wherever you already talk to your assistant, including your phone.

You typeWhat happens
Who called today, and what did they want?Your assistant reads your call list and summarizes each caller
Show me the transcript of the last callIt pulls the full transcript of that call
We're closed Monday for ThanksgivingMonday is set to closed; the receptionist uses it from the next call
Change my greeting to mention our new locationThe greeting is updated
Any appointments booked this week?It lists appointments in that date range
Set up an AI receptionist for my plumbing businessIt creates your business from what you tell it, ready for you to go live

Everything your assistant reads is limited to the one business you approved. It never sees another OrangeChat customer's data.

How it works, in plain English

Every OrangeChat account can be reached at a single address: https://orangechat.ai/mcp. When you add that address to your assistant, three things happen:

  1. Your assistant opens a sign-in page on orangechat.ai. You sign in with your OrangeChat account, or create one right there.
  2. You pick which business to connect (if you have more than one) and choose what the assistant may do. Reading your calls and settings is always on. Changing settings is a checkbox you can leave off.
  3. You click Allow, and you're sent back to your assistant. Your password is never shared with it.

From then on, your assistant can call a small set of OrangeChat tools: read calls, transcripts, customers, appointments and messages, plus set up and update the business if you allowed that.

Set it up in your assistant

Claude

Open Settings → Connectors, choose Add custom connector, name it OrangeChat, and paste https://orangechat.ai/mcp. The first time you use it, Claude opens the OrangeChat sign-in page.

Claude Code

Run one command in your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http orangechat https://orangechat.ai/mcp

Then type /mcp inside Claude Code, pick orangechat, and choose Authenticate.

Codex

Add two lines to ~/.codex/config.toml:

[mcp_servers.orangechat]
url = "https://orangechat.ai/mcp"

Then run codex mcp login orangechat once to sign in. OpenAI's Codex MCP docs cover the details.

ChatGPT, Muse and other assistants

Any assistant that lets you add an MCP connector works the same way: add a new connector, paste https://orangechat.ai/mcp, and choose OAuth sign-in. Whether you can add custom connectors depends on the assistant and, for some, on your plan.

The full step-by-step guide lives in our docs: Connect your AI assistant.

Starting from zero: let your assistant set it up

You don't need an OrangeChat account first. Connect your assistant, create an account on the sign-in page, and tell it about your business. It already knows a lot about you from your conversations, so it can usually fill in most of what a receptionist needs:

  • business name and what you do
  • opening hours and time zone
  • greeting and the name the receptionist uses
  • where call summaries should go
  • when calls should be transferred to you

It will ask you for anything it's missing. Prices, hours and policies need to be your real ones, because the receptionist repeats them to callers.

Your receptionist is not live yet at this point. To go live, you open the dashboard, choose a plan and pick a phone number. That step always needs you, because it involves payment. Plans start at $49/month; see pricing for what each plan includes. If you want to keep your existing business number, you forward it to your new AI number with a short carrier code, explained in phone number and call forwarding.

What your assistant can and can't do

Your assistant canYour assistant can't
Read calls, transcripts, customers, appointments and messagesPay, change your plan or see billing
Set up a new business (only if you have none)Buy or release phone numbers
Update hours, greeting, services, transfers and notificationsSee your API keys or connected integrations' secrets
Add custom questions for callersSend texts or emails, or place calls

Every change your assistant makes is logged with what the setting was before. You can disconnect any assistant at any time under Integrations → Your AI assistant in the OrangeChat dashboard, and its access stops immediately.

Is this for you?

This is a convenience layer on top of the AI receptionist, not a replacement for it. It fits well if you already use an AI assistant every day and want your phone line in the same place as everything else.

It's not a fit if you don't use an AI assistant at all. The OrangeChat dashboard does everything the connector does, and you don't need to learn anything new. It's also not the right tool for bulk changes across many locations; that's still faster in the dashboard today.

TL;DR

  • One address, https://orangechat.ai/mcp, connects OrangeChat to Claude, Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT, Muse and other MCP assistants.
  • Sign in on orangechat.ai, pick your business, choose read-only or read-and-update, and approve.
  • Ask about calls in plain English, or change hours and greetings by chat.
  • New owners can have their assistant set up the business; going live (plan and phone number) stays with you, from $49/month.
  • Your assistant can't pay, buy numbers or see keys, and you can disconnect it anytime.

FAQ

Do I need to be technical to connect my AI assistant?

No. In Claude you paste one address into the connectors settings and sign in. Only Claude Code and Codex use the terminal, and each needs a single command.

Can my assistant make my receptionist live or buy a phone number?

No. Your assistant can set up the business details, but choosing a plan, paying and getting a phone number always happen in the OrangeChat dashboard, by you.

What if my assistant changes something by mistake?

Every change is logged with its previous value, so it can be put back. If you don't want changes at all, leave the "change settings" box unticked when you connect, and the assistant can only read.

Does it work with ChatGPT?

Yes, on ChatGPT plans that let you add custom connectors. Add a connector with the address https://orangechat.ai/mcp and choose OAuth sign-in.

When is this not worth setting up?

If you don't use an AI assistant day to day, skip it. The dashboard does the same things, and your receptionist answers calls the same way either way.

Hear the receptionist itself

The connector manages your receptionist; the receptionist is what your callers hear. Call our demo line at (236) 246-5405 to hear it answer, or read how the AI receptionist works before you connect anything.
