FOR BILINGUAL CUSTOMER BASES
Bilingual Answering Service: English & Mandarin
Your Mandarin-speaking callers hang up on an English-only voicemail. OrangeChat answers in either language from the first word, detects which one the caller is using, and switches mid-sentence when they do — with no per-minute language surcharge and no handoff to a second operator.
- English + Mandarin, auto-detected
- Switches mid-conversation
- No per-minute language surcharge
- Included from $149/mo
Most answering services treat a second language as an add-on. You pay a monthly fee on top of your plan, and when a non-English caller comes through they are transferred to a separate bilingual pool — a handoff, a hold, and a second person who has to be re-told the whole problem. The larger providers also pair English with Spanish, which is the right pair for much of the United States and the wrong one for a line in Metro Vancouver, Richmond, the San Gabriel Valley, Flushing, or Markham, where the second language is Mandarin or Cantonese. OrangeChat is one agent that speaks both. It hears the first few words, picks the language, and holds the entire conversation there — taking the address, the symptom, the callback number, and booking the appointment without transferring anyone. On a restoration line we studied, 39% of real conversations involved Mandarin, and in most of those the caller opened in one language and moved to the other partway through. One caller started in English, asked to switch, and completed a full sewage-damage intake in Mandarin without ever being handed off.
Detects the language, doesn't ask
There is no 'press 1 for English' menu. The AI listens to the opening words and answers in that language. A caller who says 你好 hears Mandarin back immediately, which is the moment most bilingual callers decide whether to stay on the line or try the next business.
Switches mid-sentence, because callers do
Real bilingual conversations are not monolingual. A caller opens in English, gets to a word they don't have, and switches. Or starts in Mandarin and gives the street address in English. The agent follows without breaking the thread, because it is one conversation with one listener, not a transfer between two.
No per-minute language surcharge
Bilingual answering is included on the Growth and Pro plans at no extra per-minute cost. Traditional services bill a monthly bilingual add-on and then meter those calls the same as any other — so your most valuable callers are also your most expensive ones.
No handoff, no hold, no re-explaining
The usual bilingual model routes the caller to a separate pool, which means a wait and then repeating the problem to someone new. Callers in distress hang up during that gap. Here the agent that answers is the agent that finishes, books the job, and sends you the summary.
You read everything in English
Every Mandarin call arrives in your dashboard as an English summary alongside the full transcript — caller, address, what they need, urgency, what was promised. Your dispatcher does not need to speak Mandarin to run the board.
Works across voice, chat, SMS and email
The same bilingual agent handles your phone line, the chat widget on your site, inbound texts, and email replies. A customer who starts in Mandarin on the phone gets Mandarin in the follow-up text too.
Real bilingual calls OrangeChat handles
- 1
Caller opens with 你好,我家水管漏水了 → the AI answers in Mandarin, takes the address and severity, and dispatches without a transfer.
- 2
Caller starts in English, then says 'sorry, can we speak Chinese?' → the agent switches and finishes the intake in Mandarin.
- 3
Mandarin-speaking caller gives the street address in English mid-sentence → handled in one conversation, no confusion in the transcript.
- 4
An elderly parent calls in Mandarin about a clinic appointment while the adult child is at work → booked without anyone needing to translate later.
- 5
A Mandarin voicemail your office could not action for two days → replaced by a booked appointment and an English summary in your inbox.
- 6
Property manager's tenant calls in Mandarin about a leak → the AI captures unit, access and authorization, and texts the manager in English.
Bilingual is included, not an add-on
English + Mandarin is included on Growth ($149/mo, 1,100 voice minutes) and Pro ($299/mo, 2,300 minutes) — not billed as a separate bilingual plan and not metered at a higher per-minute rate. For comparison, a live bilingual answering service typically runs $325–$825/mo for 100–450 minutes, plus a monthly bilingual add-on, plus $2.75–$2.95 for every minute past the bundle. The $49 Starter plan is English-only.

Which languages does OrangeChat support today?+
English and Mandarin Chinese are live today, auto-detected mid-greeting, on the Growth ($149/mo) and Pro ($299/mo) plans. Cantonese, Spanish, French, Punjabi and Tagalog are on the near-term roadmap — tell us which one matters most for your business and we will prioritize it.
Is there an extra charge for bilingual calls?+
No. Bilingual answering is included in the Growth and Pro plans, and a Mandarin call uses the same voice minutes as an English one. There is no bilingual add-on fee and no higher per-minute rate for the second language.
Does the caller have to choose a language first?+
No. There is no phone-tree prompt. The AI detects the language from the caller's first words and answers in it. If the caller switches partway through, the agent switches with them.
How is this different from a bilingual answering service with human operators?+
Three ways. There is no transfer to a separate bilingual pool, so no hold and no repeating the problem. There is no per-minute surcharge or monthly add-on for the second language. And the agent can actually book onto your calendar and quote your rates in either language, rather than only taking a message.
Can it book appointments in Mandarin?+
Yes. The full intake runs in Mandarin — qualifying the request, quoting from your knowledge base, and booking onto your Google Calendar. Calendar booking is included on the same Growth and Pro plans.
Will I be able to understand the calls I get?+
Yes. Every call produces an English summary in your dashboard along with the full transcript, so your team can run dispatch and follow-up without anyone on staff speaking Mandarin.
Who needs a bilingual answering service?+
Any business whose callers are not all English-first. In practice that means service trades, clinics, dental offices, restaurants and property managers in Metro Vancouver, Richmond, Toronto and Markham, the San Gabriel Valley and Irvine, the Bay Area, Flushing and Queens, and Houston's Chinatown and Alief.
What happens on a Mandarin call if I am on the English-only plan?+
The $49 Starter plan answers in English only. Upgrading to Growth turns bilingual on for your line immediately — there is no separate number to provision and no change for your callers.
